Making Blanket Curtains is easy.
65
I inherited a joy of changing my curtains frequently from my grandmother. My sisters and I would go to her house on the weekends, when it was time, we would help her change her curtains. She always enjoyed the process. Watching her enjoy herself as she would fuss with the correct placement of the curtains after they were up was something I loved to see. Years after she passed on I realized that I enjoyed changing my curtains frequently as well. I find it changes the whole appearance of a room without much fuss.
Frequent curtain changes also means having different curtains to use. I get bored with the same ones over and over but I do not have a lot of money to spend on curtains. I have noticed in recent years that the price of curtains has risen. So to still be able to indulge my frequent change of curtains it meant coming up with less expensive ways to do that.
I discovered that I could buy small blankets in several of the large drugstore chains at 2 for 5 dollars and they usually measure 50 by 60 inches. That is more than enough to do a window. For 5 bucks I can do two windows!
You will need a sewing machine, unless you want to sew it all by hand, thread to match the blankets you choose, scissors, measuring tape, common pins and some time.
I measured the blanket so that I could cut it down the middle. The blankets I got had stitching on the ends so I only needed to stitch the area I just cut. I sewed that all the way up on both pieces. I decided to use the stitched edges on the end of the curtain rod instead of the center because I did not get my sewing as straight as I would like.
I took one of the two pieces that I had sewn and held it up to the window to get the length I wanted. I used my measuring tape to ensure both sides of the blanket were the same length on top. I pinned the top about an inch and a half down as I measured it. There is extra blanket at the top which you can either cut off or leave on as I did. I thought I might like to turn them around at some point and have the extra look like it is suppose to be extra fancy on the top. It is no problem to do that either because the blankets are the same color on both sides.
After pinning it I pinned it again about an inch and a half down from the original pinning. This way I have a bit on the top so if ruffles and the area for the rod is after that. I sewed across both rows. Remove the pins and you are done! That was easy!
I also use macramé string on either side of the curtains to hold them open during the day. That is easy to use as well. Just cut a piece of macramé or string about 14 inches long. Fold it in half. Put the folded piece over the rod and bring the ends through. It will pull tight and hold your curtains open.
That is how you make blanket curtains. Not only is it easy it also serves to keep heat in your house in the cold months. You may do the same thing with sheets if you are looking for a lighter curtain.
